Viral infections are responsible for a large proportion of pneumonias in preschool children. However, little is known about the prevalence of X-ray detected pneumonia in different viral LRTI, which sometimes result in unnecessary treatment. With the availability of the viral detection diagnostics it becomes possible to characterize the clinical pictures of different respiratory pathogens. The aim of our study was to find the prevalence of pneumonia in different viral LRTI.
Nasopharyngeal swab was taken from 278 preschool children with signs or symptoms of LRTI and the genome of 10 most common respiratory viruses was detected with the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based diagnostics.
Altogether 198 (71.2%) of samples were positive. Frequencies of isolates is shown in
X-ray detected pneumonia was present in 71.4% of coronavirus infections, 70% of metapneumovirus infections, 38.9% of parainfluenza infections, 33.3% of respiratory syncytial virus infections, 23.1% of adenovirus infections, 13.6% of bocavirus infections and 7.7% of rhinovirus infections (p<0.01). There was no difference in the prevalence of pneumonia between single, double or triple infections (p=0.87).
Some respiratory viruses, such as coronavirus and metapneumovirus are typically associated with the presence of pneumonia, which does not mean the bacterial cause of infection. Further studies are necessary for characterization of different viral LRTI.
